| Resumo | Scientists consider the region of Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) in the South Atlantic Ocean as a key region to better understand the linkage processes between Antarctica and South America. The efforts of the High Latitudes Oceanography Group (GOAL) in Brazil to study the ocean-atmosphere coupling in the BMC region were recently summarized in Pezzi et al. (2005, 2009) and Acevedo et al. (2010). Data was collected by SOS-Climate (Southern Ocean Studies for Understanding Global Climate Issues) within the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) as part of CASO (Climate of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean Ocean Circulation Cluster). New capacities of the country on research vessels and programs to observe the South Atlantic and the Southern Ocean will enable research based upon in situ measurements of heat and CO2 fluxes in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean for several years to come. This paper describes the major results obtained by GOAL on heat (sensible, latent) estimates in the past and summarizes the projects approved for the next years including the establishment of the new National Institute for Science and Technology of the Cryosphere in Brazil. | |||
